ForMin Odobescu meets Belarusian opposition leader Tsikhanouskaya
Romania's Foreign Minister Luminita Odobescu had a meeting on Thursday with Belarusian opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, discussing the domestic situation in Belarus, the geopolitical situation in the region and the support provided by the Lukashenko regime to the Russian aggression against Ukraine.
According to the Romanian Foreign Ministry (MAE), Odobescu voiced Romania's concern over the intensification of repressions, intimidations, arrests and political convictions targeting the media, activists and the entire civil society in Belarus.
She also highlighted the multiple violations of fundamental rights and freedoms amidst the general local elections in Belarus on February 25. The head of the Romanian diplomacy urged "the Belarusian opposition in exile to unity, stressing the importance of convergent action in promoting the democratic aspirations of the citizens of this nation."
Odobescu highlighted Romania's active involvement in supporting the Belarusian civil society, independent media and political opposition.
In her turn, Tsikhanouskaya thanked Romania for its political and diplomatic support, "concretely provided through funds donated to the Belarusian civil society and independent media," MAE reports. She assured of continued efforts to keep attention to the serious violations of human rights in Belarus, and the international isolation of the Lukashenko regime.
