Friedman: US president wants to have a meeting with the president of Romania, country where there are American troups
The American geo-political analyst George Friedman stated on Saturday on TVR that the visit of the president of Romania to the US is a confirmation of the importance of the relations between the two countries, mentioning that Donald Trump, ‘who has serious questions about many alliances’ wanted to show that he does not doubt the relation with Romania.
" ‘We have to understand that it was expected that the president of the US wants to have a meeting with the president of Romania, country where there are American troups, councillors, representatives of the US, this is important. I think that what happened is nothing new, it was a confirmation of the importance of the relations and a mutual guarantee for the continuation of the good relations and this is important. It was important for the American public to see the president of Romania, to know who is the leader of the country where American troups are deployed’ Friedman said, founder of the American company for geostrategic analysis Stratfor, in an interview for TVR.
He added that Romania is strategically important in many ways.
‘The US have developed a strategy in their relation with the Russians. We don’texpect a war with Russia,we don’t want a war. We don’tattack Russia, but we want to be sure that Europe is protected and for us the eastern flank is crucial. There are two countries crucial for this flank, one is Poland and this other one is Romania. And Romania has two-sided significance. Firstly, it is in the first line against Russia and at the same time, there is a geographic relation with Turkey and that region is unpredictable. So, you are a country neighbouring the Black Sea, between the Carpathians, you are a Balkanic country, you are strategically important in many ways’ Friedman explained.
The American analyst said that the US need allies. ‘ At the present moment, we are interested in Korea, the Middle East, Europe and we need allies. We are not sure who our allies in Europe are, we know what state belongs to what organisation, who presents an interest and who presents a risk. Romania is a country who presents a risk and an interest. That is why, the US have something in common with Romania, something which they don’t have with Portugal, for example or other countries. This is the basis of the relations underway, which will develop very strongly. It is not about Romania only, but about Poland as well, the Baltic countries and I hope, at a certain moment, Hungary’ Friedman said.
According to him, the US are very close to Romania and Poland, as compared to the rest of Europe, and this relation will develop by the increase of the military presence and cooperation which have to be discussed.
‘What was discussed at the meeting were the principles of our relation. It was essential to show to the American people the importance of Romania for the US, to tell the American people that when the government sends troups to Romania, this is the basis of a friendship. It was important to tell the Romanians who accepted this relation that the US takes this relation seriously at the highest level (…). In the case of Romania, where the relation is very young, it was important for the new American president who has serious questions about many alliances to confirm that he doesn’t doubt the relation with Romania’ added George Friedman.
He also said that Romania must become prosperous. ‘ I am looking at your region and I see an area with much intellectual potential, the population who is educated, willing to work, extraordinary in many ways. As an American I would like to see the country prosperous and it seems that Romania has the potential to prosper. But it needs to create room for entrepreneurial activities of its citizens. The future of Romania is in the hands of the Romanians. I say that this is translated into a strategic alliance, a strategic relation.(…) Romania has now an immense value for the US and this has an immense potential for you. I urge you to use and exploit this thing’ Friedman concluded.
