George Cristian Maior on Giuliani letter: He is a private person who has no official status in the American state
Rudolph Giuliani, President Trump’s lawyer, has sent a letter to President Klaus Iohannis, Prime Minister Viorica Dancila and the two Parliament Speakers regarding the protocols signed by the Prosecutor General’s Office and the Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI).
The letter mentions “the continuing damage to the rule of law in Romania” and the “DNA excesses.”
At a meeting of Romanian diplomacy, Maior said Rudolph Giuliani, a former mayor of New York, is a "sparkling" character, and the letter he sent to the Romanian president is "the expression of a lobby initiated by some forces that are interested in defending of some legally challenged characters in Romania."
"Mr. Giuliani is a sparkling and extremely combative character in the US, and I do not know if he is still Mr Trump's lawyer. Check that. In any case, the letter is the expression of lobbying by some forces that are interested in the defence of legally challenged people," Maior said, responding to a question about a letter sent by Giuliani to President Klaus Iohannis, the chairs of the two chambers of the Romanian Parliament and Prime Minister Viorica Dancila.
As for the street protests of August 10, he said he did not notice any "more special" perception from the US Administration.
"I am trying to promote our strategic, security, economic, political interests in this dialogue. We've had no discussions about this. I have not notice any more special perceptions from the US Administration," said Maior.
According to a press statement released by MAE on Monday, Romania's ambassador to the United States George Maior has been called for explanations at the main offices of the Romanian Foreign Affairs Ministry (MAE) offices in Bucharest
"We can assure our international partners that in Romania there is the necessary political will on the part of the Romanian government and the government coalition to guarantee the proper functioning of the rule of law, respecting fundamental rights and freedoms, developing a genuine democracy and combating harmful phenomena such as the phenomenon of corruption. Mr ambassador George Maior has taken a stance that was not approved at the level of the central office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the government and does not represent the position of the Foreign Ministry. A Romanian ambassador should make sure - under the Vienna convention on diplomatic relations that he or she always represent the interests of the Romanian state in the state where he or she is accredited. His role is to promote the national interest as it derives from the institutional consensus and to refrain from public statements likely to adversely affect the bilateral relations with other countries. Know that the ambassadors' action guidelines are agreed upon at the level of the institutions in Romania and any deviation will attract accountability, according to procedures in force. In this respect, Mr ambassador George Maior will be called for explanations at the MAE main offices," according to the MAE statement.
Ambassador George Maior said that he has taken note of the press statement released by Romania's Ministry of Foreign Affairs about him being called to explain his reaction on Monday following the appearance in public of a letter ''attributed to a private citizen of the United States of America.''
In a press statement , Maior says that he will respond "interestedly and openly" to being called to the MAE main office, where he will provide detailed explanations of what he is asked.
"As regards my commentary on a letter attributed to Rudolph Giuliani, I want to mention that the American citizen named above is a private person who has no official status in the American state," he says.
''While all official positions publicly expressed by United States representatives in recent years, including this year, have ran contrary to the spirit and meaning of the messages in the letter attributed to Mr Rudolph Giuliani, I believed in good faith that it was my duty, as an ambassador of Romania, to defend our country's reputation against incorrect points of view," he explains.
About the bilateral relations with the United States having been thus affected, Maior references a letter he received last year from current US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, a former director of the CIA, in which the US official noted his contribution to the construction of "excellent" relations with the United States over time to Romania's benefit.
The conclusion of the letter sent by Rudolph Giuliani is that the confidence in Romania's Justice system is "seriously shaken" in front of our foreign partners and investors, chairman of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) Liviu Dragnea wrote on a Facebook post.
He mentioned that he received from Giuliani the same letter that the latter had also sent to President Klaus Iohannis.
