Global Traffic Congestion Index: Bucharest ranks 8th as the most crowded cities in the world
In 2023, Bucharest is on the 8th place in the list of the most crowded cities in the world, according to the annual index conducted by the manufacturer of GPS systems Tomtom. In Europe, we are in 4th place. Last year, the people of Bucharest lost 150 more hours in traffic due to congestion, the average travel speed at peak hour being about 17 km/hour.
The congestion level was around 55%, according to the cited source. Compared to 2022, the city is more congested, with the time required to travel a distance of 10 km increasing by 20 seconds to 27 minutes and 40 seconds. In 2022, we were 7th in this list, and in 2021, we were 8th.
The most congested day in 2023 was November 28 when it took 36 minutes and 50 seconds to travel a distance of 10 km. Due to the crowding at peak hours, the people of Bucharest lost 150 hours more and paid almost 1,000 lei more for fuel.
During the week, the greatest traffic congestion is recorded on Wednesdays, between 17.00 and 18.00, when a distance of 10 km is covered in about 41 minutes on average.
