Government debt reaches almost 36pct of GDP at end of April 2020

At the end of April 2020, the public administration debt (government debt) totaled 405.135 billion lei, 35.9 percent of the GDP, respectively, according to data centralized by the Public Finance Ministry. Of this, 18.98 billion lei represents the short-term debt and the rest represents the medium and long-term debt. Most of this debt, namely 336.667 billion lei, was represented by government securities.

The central public administration debt amounts to 389.78 billion lei, of which 370.809 billion lei on medium and long-term, the largest part being in lei currency (189.53 billion lei) and euro currency (167.9 billion lei, equivalent). The local public administration debt amounted to 15.35 billion lei, of which 15.33 billion lei on medium and long-term.

According to the Public Finance Ministry, the external debt of the public administration was 191.336 billion lei, of which 186.9 billion lei was that of the central public administration and 4.42 billion lei of the local public administration, and almost entirely (191.188 billion lei ) was on medium and long-term.
