Hyperimmune plasma therapy available in Brasov County Emergency Hospital after Easter

Treatment with hyperimmune plasma, which is currently used experimentally in several European countries, will also be accessible to COVID-19 patients in serious condition in Brasov, following the conclusion by the Brasov County Council of a sponsorship contract with a company that will provide a plasmapheresis machine (that separates human plasma from blood) free of charge.

"After Easter Holidays the machine will be installed at the Brasov County Emergency Clinical Hospital, which has an authorized blood collection unit, and will be used to collect convalescent plasma from donors who have already been cured from COVID-19 and have an increased level of antibodies that can be thus transferred to critically ill patients to help neutralize the virus in the recipient's body. The collected human plasma may also be used to prevent the infection of vulnerable persons or those at high risk of infection (eg. healthcare professionals who handle patients infected with SARS-CoV-2), according to the protocols on the experimental use of this therapy approved by order of the Health Minister," the Brasov County Council said in a release.

The equipment will be delivered no later than April 25 by Besmax Pharma Distribution, which supplies a total of 18 plasmapheresis machines to several locations where they have been requested by the local authorities or the Ministry of Health, the cited source said.
