President Klaus Iohannis will take part, on Thursday and Friday, in the European Council, in Brussels, the topics of the meeting including the support for Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova, as well as the new structure of the European Parliament, the Presidential Administration reports.

Thus, the agenda of the European Council includes topical issues, such as the situation in Ukraine, the security and defense of the European Union, the situation in the Middle East, competitiveness, the phenomenon of migration, the Black Sea, the Republic of Moldova and issues related to hybrid threats.

The EU leaders will also continue the discussions on the new institutional cycle of the Union, namely the appointments to the leadership of the European institutions, following the recent European elections. At the same time, the members of the European Council will have discussions with a view to adopting the Strategic Agenda for the period 2024-2029 and the Roadmap for the internal reform of the EU.

Regarding Ukraine, president Iohannis "will reiterate the need to continue support on all dimensions, with a particular emphasis on ensuring an adequate response to immediate military needs". At the same time, he will emphasize the importance of continuing support for the Republic of Moldova, both at the European level and bilaterally.

In terms of security and defense, the leaders of the European Union will continue the discussions started at the European Council of March 2024. In this context, Klaus Iohannis will plead for a strong action by the Union in order to strengthen its defense capabilities, in full complementarity with NATO.

Considering the fact that the Black Sea has entered a new dynamic, from a political, security and connectivity point of view, the president of Romania "will emphasize the crucial importance of the Black Sea for regional security, but also for the security of the entire European Union and will plead for a new strategic approach to the Black Sea at the European level".

As regards the situation in the Middle East, the Romanian President will insist that the EU should remain engaged in the region and contribute to de-escalating the conflict and avoiding its further expansion in the area, something that would directly affect the Union's security. He will also call for an irreversible political process based on a two-state solution.

With regard to the future institutional cycle of the European Union, the Romanian head of state will speak for a constructive approach and for a quick and smooth transition between the two institutional cycles, "which takes into account the common interest of the member states, as well as the legitimate expectations of the European citizens, who demonstrated their pro-European attachment in the June 6-9 elections".
