Minister for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of the Kingdom of Spain, Alfonso Maria Dastis Quecedo, welcomed at the Cotroceni presidential palace

President Klaus Iohannis welcomed on Wednesday at the Cotroceni presidential palace Minister for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of the Kingdom of Spain, Alfonso Maria Dastis Quecedo, affirming on the occasion Romania's unwavering support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Spain.

According to a Presidential Administration release, President Iohannis highlighted the excellent strategic partnership between the two countries, with the Spanish Minister fully sharing the same opinion.

"President Klaus Iohannis affirmed Romania's unwavering support for Spain's sovereignty and territorial integrity, underscoring, in the context of Catalonia developments, the need to respect the constitutional framework and the principles of international law. The President also pointed out that, in Romania's vision, this is an internal problem of Spain and expressed confidence that the most suitable solutions will be found within this framework, to return to the Spanish constitutional order," the release said.

The head of the Romanian state also expressed his appreciation for the efforts of the Spanish authorities to facilitate the integration of Romanian citizens in the Spanish society, as they acknowledge the positive contribution of this community to the Spanish economy.

"In his turn, Minister Alfonso Maria Dastis Quecedo agreed that the integration of the Romanian community in Spain is a success story and pointed out that the Kingdom of Spain is glad to have this important community residing on its territory," said the Presidential Administration.

President Iohannis underlined the need for the two countries to strengthen the upward trend of economic cooperation, as in the first half of 2017 trade was more than 7 percent up from the same period last year.

The two officials also praised the quality of bilateral cooperation in other areas, defence included, of their interaction within the European Union and NATO, and in the fight against terrorism, mentioning in this context the Romanian-Spanish project for the establishment of the International Court for Terrorism.

"President Klaus Iohannis and Minister Alfonso Maria Dastis Quecedo expressed their confidence that through joint efforts, Romania and Spain will render the valuable strategic partnership of the two states even stronger," the release said.
