Moldovan Ambassador on EU accession: Romania's experience, priceless

Romania's experience in joining the European Union is "priceless," and Chisinau will most likely call on experts dispatched from Bucharest, Moldovan Ambassador Victor Chirila said on Monday.

"We have to be very cautious about the commitments we are going to make, and here Romania's experience is priceless, because Romania has encountered some not-so-positive effects of the commitments made. Obviously, we are looking forward to these experts who will be dispatched either through the TAIEX mechanism, we hope, or directly, through funding by the Romanian authorities," said the diplomat at a press briefing.

He stressed that one of his country's major objectives this year is to start accession negotiations with the European Union.

"We currently need experts to prepare not only for the start of negotiations with the European Union, but also to prepare for each individual area, when we already start negotiations by areas, starting next year," Chirila explained.

In his opinion, justice reform will be one of the most difficult chapters. "We see strong resistance from within the system. There have been attempts to stop these reforms, for example to stop the pre-vetting process, the evaluation of candidates for the Superior Council of Magistracy. They did not succeed," the ambassador said.

He added that the legislation of the Republic of Moldova must be harmonised with that of the European Union, "and this can be done most easily with and through Romania, because Romania already has translated this legislation that we need."

"Romania also has an experience, one more positive, one less positive, and we need to learn from both dimensions of this experience," said Victor Chirila.

According to him, the "European Moldova" National Assembly to be held in Chisinau on May 21 will be "a strong message" to "anti-reform groups" in the Moldovan legal system.
