No risk for Romania to witness terror attacks

There is no risk for Romania to witness terror attacks, chairman of Parliament's Foreign Intelligence Service (SIE) Oversight Committee Mihaita Calimente said after the meeting of this supervisory body with SIE head Mihai-Razvan Ungureanu.

"At this moment, Romania is not at the risk of attacks or serious incidents. We stay focused on current developments, and overall I'd say the Service has done its duty, also by not encouraging in immigration source countries a migrant flow to Romania," Calimente said in Parliament.

According to him, the terror alert level in Romania is blue cautious.

Calimente voiced his opinion that once the situation in Syria is settled, attacks in Europe will subside.

The Committee chairman said that talks with the SIE head also tackled the budget of the institution. In this context, he said that should they arise, the parliamentary Committee will support SIE's requests for budget additions.

"Mr. Mihai-Razvan Ungureanu told us that he has seen the draft budget and that he considers the amounts set forth there are enough, and that spent wisely, they can meet the requirements of the Service," Calimente added.

Romania not being a member of the Schengen area does not encourage migrants to come to Romania for the time being and in the foreseeable future, says Chairman of Parliament's Foreign Intelligence Service (SIE) Oversight Committee Mihaita Calimente, who expects the migration flow to stay quite high."The pace of migration has not abated and there is no foreseeing an abatement, despite the winter conditions, in the flow because they might think Germany will say stop and close its borders, and that is why those en route want to get there and the migration flow, despite the weather worsening, will stay quite high," Calimente said at Parliament House after a meeting with SIE Director Mihai-Razvan Ungureanu.

Asked what will happen with the refugees that should have arrived in Romania this November, he said that as far as he is concerned they will not arrive too soon, because they cannot be forced into coming.

"An attempt was made at their identification in Italy, but to no avail, because they are free there, there are no camps or centres to impede their movement. In my opinion, a very personal opinion, they will not come here too soon because they cannot be forced into coming. Leaving countries such as Italy or Germany, both in the Schengen Area, to come to a country that is not in the Schengen Area (...) they are informed people who know what it is all about and probably they do not want to come to Romania," said Calimente.

Parliament's Joint Committee on SIE Oversight on Tuesday invited SIE Director Mihai-Razan Ungureanu for a testimony on the latest developments on Syria and migration.

"That was an interesting conversation where we were presented the main elements of the ongoing conflict in Syria, the possible developments there and also an assessment of the possibility of migration routes reaching Romania, which has not been confirmed by the SIE. There is a possibility of the migration routes crossing Central Europe and Western Europe along the already known paths; geography and the fact that Romania is not in the Schengen Area discourage the migrants from coming to Romania right now or in a foreseeable future. As long as the routes currently operating stay open to Central Europe and Western Europe via the Balkans, there is not temptation of coming to Romania," said Calimente.
