October 12, the National Day of Spain
Press release sent by the Embassy of Spain in Bucharest to ACTMedia:
Today, we the Spanish celebrate winning the country’s political and national unity and the ties connecting us to our brothers and sisters in Latin America. Even though ties between Spain and Romania are somewhat more recent, this year we celebrate 135 years since diplomatic relations were established between the two countries. On this occasion the Embassy of Spain in Bucharest wants to celebrate our excellent relations in all domains.
Within the European Union, our countries are among the most ardent supporters of better integration, being convinced that the solution to challenges we face in Europe is greater unity, bigger conjugated effort and more solidarity. Spain acknowledges efforts made by Romania to protect EU borders and that is why it continues to support Romania’s legitimate aspiration to join the Schengen area.
This year Spain has allocated effective troops for the new allied structures in Romania and continued to participate with ships in NATO maritime formations in its waters.
Both states continue to promote the joint initiative to create and International Court against Terrorism to equip the community of nations with a new efficient instrument to fight against this threat to peace and international security. Equally, our security forces continue to collaborate actively in preventing and fighting organized crime or person trafficking.
Commercial relations have known an ascending impulse as expected from two of the most dynamic economies in EU. Bilateral trade grew by 16% in 2015, reaching 3,200 million euros. In the first half of 2016, the increase was 20%. Spanish companies, leaders in fields like infrastructure, services, energy, water and waste management, carry out projects in the whole country, this contributing to its development.
The Spanish language, spoken by more than 560 million persons in the whole world, is also the second most used language on Facebook and Twitter. Cervantes Institute in Bucharest and ten bilingual sections the Spanish Ministry of Education maintains throughout the country are answering the growing demand of Spanish culture and language.
New cooperation domains have developed this year - reform in administration and prevention of domestic violence, which prove the vitality of ties uniting us.
Our ties are based on the most powerful pillar ever: inter-human ties coming from the presence in Spain of more than a million Romanian citizens, the first largest foreign community in Spain and the second largest Romanian community beyond borders, citizens who contribute every day to the dynamism of our society and development of our economy.
