Pentagon official about US permanent military bases in Eastern Europe
The US are favorable to establishing American military bases on the eastern NATO flank, but want to avoid permanent station of American soldiers there, preferring to deploy them by rotation, in a continuous rotation system which will mean in fact a permanent presence, the chief or major staff of the US army, General Mark Milley at a hearing in the House of Representatives on Tuesday, AFP writes.
The US military official explained that the American army will not need to build houses, schools, stores, a.o, for soldier families in this situation. He said that many European allies, the Baltic states, Poland and Romania are willing to establish permanent bases for American forces. They will build and pay for them, Milley pointed out.
The question of setting permanent US military bases in Eastern Europe, which became urgent following the Russian invasion in Ukraine, will be discussed at the NATO summit in June, the Pentagon official confirmed.
The US have about 67,000 soldiers permanently stationed in Europe, especially in Germany, the UK and Italy. They come with their families for a mission of two or three years, and the bases have houses, schools, hospitals and even supermarkets where they can buy American products.
