Pfizer fires employees in Belgium and transfers activities in Romania

The American pharmaceutical group Pfizer will fire 15% of employees in its distribution center from Zaventem (Belgium). A part of the center activities will be located in Romania, according to the daily La Libre Belgique.

According to union sources, about 38 of the 238 employees of the distribution center Pfizer has  at Zaventem will lose their jobs. The reason mentioned by company leaders is locating the supply planning service to Bucharest.

Unions declare they are shocked by the announcement made by Pfizer, one of the big anti Covid 19 vaccine manufacturers.“Firing people in the present sanitary context is a blow for all Pfizer employees working for the success of the company which, among other things, is contributing to the manufacture of vaccines against Covid 19”, said Michel Barbuto, union representative.

The company management is talking about improving organization. “We are permanently trying to improve the organization of the world supply chain. At present we are exploring options allowing us to better centralize resources, to improve process efficiency, continuing at the same time to offer the best services. That could be translated by redistributing several positions within the supply chain in out extended network,”said a Pfizer spokesperson.

The American pharmaceutical group Pfizer has now about 2,500 employees in Belgium, in four localities : Anderlecht (clinical research center), Ixelles (administrative and commercial center), Puurs (production center) and Zaventem (distribution center).
