President Iohannis, EU Commissioner Oettinger discuss future EU budget
President Klaus Iohannis on Thursday welcomed European Commissioner for Budget and Human Resources Gunther Oettinger at Cotroceni Palace to discuss the future multiannual financial framework of the European Union post 2020.
"President Klaus Iohannis underscored that to Romania talks on the post-2020 European Union budget are of particular importance as the country will be one of the member states to manage budget negotiations and to hold the presidency of the Council of the European Union in the first half of 2019," the Presidential Administration says in a press statement.
Iohannis stated himself in favour of a balanced future budget of the European Union that is capable of meeting all the expectations of the member states and European citizens, to accommodate both the new priorities and those that have led to the bridging of gaps and economic growth in the EU. He also voiced hope that the future multiannual budget will strengthen unity and convergence within the European Union.
At the same time, Iohannis voiced Romania's priority interest in securing, in the future EU multiannual budget, the most important allocations for the Cohesion Policy and the Common Agricultural Policy.
President Iohannis also underlined the fact that Romania supports a strong cohesion policy and a strong agricultural policy in order to be able to respond as effectively as possible to the economic, environmental and social challenges facing the EU.
In his turn, Commissioner Oettinger said the European Commission intends to put forth in May 2018 a proposal for the EU's multi-annual budget post 2020, voicing hope that it could be adopted as early as possible in 2019.
