President Iohannis had a telephone conversation Prime Minister of the State of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu
President Klaus Iohannis had a telephone conversation on Friday with the Prime Minister of the State of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, during which the officials tackled the status of Jerusalem issue and what happened after the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution draft on this matter.
The Presidential Administration underscored that, according to this position, which was also approved by Romania's President prior to the vote, based on the argued proposal, as provided in written, by the Romanian Foreign Affairs Ministry, Jerusalem represents a central topic of the negotiations for peace and its status should be established after the conclusion of a direct agreement between the parties.
Moreover, Romania also underscored, in its reasoning for the vote, the need for a fair and sustainable resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, through the implementation of "the solution of the two states," Israel and Palestine, which should coexist in peace and safety, as the single viable and capable option that can guarantee the fulfillment of both parties' aspirations.
Furthermore, on the same occasion, it was revealed that Romania's position regarding the status of Jerusalem is in accordance with the one established through the UN Security Council and the UN General Assembly resolutions in this area. In support for its position adopted during the voting, Romania called for calm, encouraged the parties to resume direct dialogue for unlocking the peace process and showed that, currently, the renewal of international efforts to relaunch this dialogue is necessary, context in which, the moment chosen for the promotion of the Resolution adopted on 21 December 2017 was regarded with reluctance by our country, which also motivated its "abstention" to vote.
"In conclusion, a possible decision to move the Romanian Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem can only be taken based on the mentioned parameters, while also taking into account the future developments of the Peace Process in the Middle East and, as part of it, the Jerusalem status issues," the Presidential Administration release underscores.
