President Iohannis, received by his counterpart from Brazil

President Klaus Iohannis, who is on an official visit to Brazil, the first at the head of state level in the last 23 years, was received on Tuesday by his Brazilian counterpart, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

The head of state was received at the Itamaraty Palace. President Klaus Iohannis is accompanied by his wife, Carmen Iohannis. The president of Brazil is accompanied by his wife, Rosangela da Silva.

President Klaus Iohannis and his Brazilian counterpart, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, signed, on Tuesday, a joint statement regarding the development of bilateral relations, in a context in which the Romanian head of state showed that it is necessary for joint efforts to continue for encouraging businesspeople from the two countries to start joint projects, as well as to stimulate mutual investments.

"The central message of my visit is Romania's commitment to the deepening and boosting the relations with your country, for the benefit of our nations. Together with President Lula da Silva, we adopted the Joint Declaration on the development of bilateral relations. This document confirms the mutual commitment to the revitalization of our relations in the coming years and offers, at the same time, the guidance and political impetus necessary to expand contacts between the two countries, at all levels and in all fields of mutual interest", declared the head of state, at the Itamaraty Palace.

He showed that he discussed with his Brazilian counterpart about ways to deepen the existing cooperation, but also to expand it to new areas, such as agricultural research, digitalization, climate change, education and culture.

"We agreed that it is necessary to continue joint efforts to encourage businessmen from our countries to identify and start joint projects, as well as to stimulate mutual investments," said President Iohannis.

He also indicated that the commitment to continue the very good cooperation between the two countries on subjects of common interest at the multilateral level was reiterated.

The head of state pointed out that Brazil is an old friend of Romania and the most important economic partner in the Latin American region, and that this year marked the 95th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic relations with this country.

He added that the message of Romania, as a neighboring state and with the longest border with Ukraine, is clear, strong and must be understood by its partners, namely the fact that no matter how much Moscow tries to justify its actions, Russia is an aggressor state.

"We presented to the President our vision regarding the security situation on Romania's border and the war of aggression launched by Russia against Ukraine. Romania's message, as a neighboring state and with the longest border among the European Union and NATO states with Ukraine, it is clear, strong and must be understood by our partners: no matter how much Moscow tries to justify its actions, Russia is an aggressor state, which violated by force the territorial sovereignty of Ukraine and tried to annul its independence, also violating the UN Charter. Ukraine is the victim of Russian aggression. All the negative effects of this aggression at the global level are the direct consequence of its action, contrary to international law. The international community has the duty to support Ukraine to reject the aggression and to win this war for the liberation of the country," the head of state said.

President Klaus Iohannis emphasized that Romania will continue "unwaveringly" to support Ukraine, showing that any support for the security of this country is, in fact, support for the security of Romania and its citizens.

The head of state specified that he also presented to his Brazilian counterpart the consequences of the war in multiple ways, from the situation of refugees to the energy or food crisis.

He gave assurances that Romania supports Brazil in advancing the European Union - Brazil agenda.

"We therefore support the completion of the trade agreement between the European Union and MERCOSUR as soon as possible", said Klaus Iohannis.

He emphasized that he personally supports the efforts to organize a historic European Union - Community of Latin American and Caribbean States summit this year, with important results.

"We will get involved in the success of this event, in order to place biregional relations on a more promising and sustainable trajectory", added the head of state.

The discussions between the two presidents also covered the accession process of the two countries to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).

The delegation of President Klaus Iohannis includes the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bogdan Aurescu, presidential advisors Luminita Odobescu, Cosmin Marinescu, Daniela Barsan, Delia Dinu, state advisors Sandra Pralong, Alexandra Bocse.
