President Iohannis to attend the 79th session of the UN General Assembly in New York
President Klaus Iohannis will lead, on September 24 and 25, a Romanian delegation to the high-level segment of the 79th session of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly, which will take place in New York.
The central theme of the current session of the General Assembly is "Unity in diversity, for the advancement of peace, sustainable development, and human dignity for everyone everywhere."
According to the Presidential Administration, Iohannis' participation in this year's United Nations General Assembly is "an opportunity to highlight Romania's contribution to the global effort to accelerate progress towards the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, amidst continuing major challenges to the rules-based international order, rules that are increasingly disrespected."
On Wednesday, Iohannis will deliver the national address to a plenary session of the UN General Assembly, urging for keeping up dialogue at multilateral level, especially in the UN format, as an essential element of regional and global security.
The President will also highlight Romania's efforts and contribution, at all levels, to solving current global problems, from security crises such as the war in Ukraine and the conflict in the Middle East, to major challenges to humanity, including the climate emergency, the erosion of human rights, and cyber threats.
In his speech, Iohannis will also call for a reformed UN system to become capable of responding to all current and future challenges in an efficient and transparent way.
