Romania, biggest grain exporter in EU at beginning of 2024-2025 season

The European Union exported 4.82 million tons of wheat in the first months of 2024-2025 season, 23% less than the 6.25 million tons exported in the same period of the previous season, the European Commission announced on Tuesday, which mentioned however that data were not complete, Reuters informs.

 

Over July 1 – September 8, 2024, Romania was the biggest wheat exporter in EU, with 1.72 million tons, followed by Lithuania (620,000 tons), Bulgaria (550,000 tons), Germany and France (both with 500,000 tons).

 

In the first two months of 2024-2025 season, EU exported 1.321 million tons of barley, on the drop by 34% against the same period of the 2023-2024 season, as well as 184,023 tons of corn, on the drop by 20% annually.

 

Both for barley and corn, Romania was the biggest exporter in EU, with 824,640 tons of barley and 104,169 tons of corn in the first two months of the farming season starting on July 1, 2024.

 

As for imports, EC data show that EU wheat imports remained the same, at 1.373 million tons, while corn imports grew by 20% to 3.848 million tons. Ukraine was the biggest supplier of corn and wheat in EU over July 1 – September 8, 2024, with 2.297 million tons, and 866,658 tons respectively.

 

Among member states, Spain was the largest wheat importer in EU at the beginning of 2024-2025 season, with 810,000 tons. Also Spain was the biggest corn importer in EU, with 1.28 million tons imported in the mentioned period.

 

The European Commission pointed out that export data in France are incomplete since the beginning of 2024, while export and import data for Bulgaria and Ireland are incomplete since the beginning of the 2023-2024 farming year. France is the largest wheat exporter in EU and Bulgaria is an important wheat supplier.
