Romania has the lowest commercial deficit with Russia, as compared to the neighbouring states

Only four EU member states had in 2021 a trade balance surplus with Russia, while Romania has a higher commercial deficit than that of Germany with Russia, show the data published on Monday by Eurostat, quoted by news.ro.

According to these data, in 2021 Romania imported from Russia goods worth 3.160 billion euro and exported goods worth 1.001 billion euro, with a deficit of the trade balance of 2.159 billion euro. By comparison, Germany which in 2021 was the biggest European importer and exporter of goods to and from Russia, had a deficit of the trade balance of 2.083 billion euro with Russia. This happened as the first European economy imported from Russia goods worth 28.856 billion euro and exported goods worth 26.777 billion euro.

The trade deficit of Romania with Russia is smaller than compared to that of the neighbouring states, being surpassed by that of Hungary (2.420 billion euro), Bulgaria (2.547 billion euro), Slovakia (2.868 billion euro), Greece (4.091 billion euro) or Poland (8.721 billion euro).

The two EU member states with a surplus of the trade balance with Russia are : the Czech Republic (616 million euro), Slovenia (436 million euro), Sweden (244 million euro) and Luxembourg (139 million euro).

At the other end, the member states with the highest trade balance deficit with Russia are : the Netherlands (18.717 billion euro), Poland (8.721 billion euro) and Italy (6.288 billion euro).

The Eurostat data show that, at the level of the EU, energy represented 62% of the imports of the community block from Russia. In 2021, Russia was the fifth partner of the EU for goods exports (4.1% of the EU exports or 89 billion euro) and third big partner for goods imports (7.5% of the EU imports or 158 billion euro). Over the last decade, however, the deficit of the trade balance of the EU with Russia dropped from 89 billion euro in 2011 to 69 billion euro in 2021. Both exports and imports of the community block to and from Russia dropped between 2011 and 2021.
