Schengen: Yilva Johansson hopes for decision on accession of Romania and Bulgaria until end year
Ylva Johansson, the European commissioner for internal affairs was confident on Tuesday that a positive decision on the accession of Romania and Bulgaria to the Shengen area until the end of the year.
“We had a recent briefing mission in Bulgaria, which was a real success.” Ylva Johansson said before the meeting of EU home affairs ministers held in Brussels that she would use that opportunity to speak about how well prepared both countries were to access the Schengen area and intended to obtain the decision this year.
There would be not voting at the Tuesday meeting about Romania's accession to Schengen, as included on the agenda initially, but there would be only a discussion about the present situation of the case, according to the agenda updated on December 1st.
Bucharest government sources announced last week that Romania would not request a vote at JAI Council of December 4-5 and there were talksabout the organization of an extraordinary JAI Council by the end of December to analyze the accession of Romania to Schengen in two stages, the first one for air borders as of March 2024.
