Study about TV consumption in Romania: Longest time spent in front of TV - 8 hours/day
One out of three Romanians has three TV sets in the house, when 34% of people interviewed spend between four and six hours in front of TV and 17% spend 7 hours in weekend, said Mihai Ursoi, ASTRA representative at the launch of a study about television consumption, on Thursday.
According to the study “Television consumption index in Romania 2017 - TVCI Romania 2017”for the local market, 17% of respondents have over four TV sets in their houses, about 30% have three TV sets, 36% respondents said they have two TV sets and only 19% have a single set, said Ursoi, ASTRA country manager for Romania, Bulgaria and Moldova.
As for the time spent by Romanians in front of television, about half of those interviewed spend 2-3 hours every day, one out of six spends four to six hours daily in front of television. In weekends, 17% of respondents spend over 7 hours in front of television and 34% spend between 4 and 6 hours.
“There is a study made by a French company specialised in measuring audiences according to which Romania is one of few countries where watching time is growing, a lot over the world average. World average is three hours and Romania was around 5.27 hours in 2015 and 5.46 hours in 2016. More important, this tendency is also seen among young people, where the average watching time was3.14 hours in 2015 and 3.37 hours in 2016,” Ursoi explained.
About 60% of participants in the study are willing to pay an extra 22 lei for 5 HD channels. Last year only 39% of participants were willing to pay an extra 25 lei for 5 HD channels. Over 72% of respondents consider HD image quality is very important when they want to buy a new TV set or want to change the television supplier. Last year the interest in HD quality was 61%.
As for the type of HD content consumed, 68% of Romanians declare they prefer documentary channels, 63% prefer entertainment and one out of two prefer sports.
“About one out of three Romanians have subscriptions to satellite TV services in a country where penetration of paid television exceeds 97%”, Ursoi said.
For content preferences, news channels have lost some ground from 81% in 2016 to 77% this year, but continue to rank first in Romanians’ preferences. General audience/entertainment channels gradually climbed, having a 65% increase in the last two years, being preferred by three out of four Romanians in 2017. Travel and documentary channels have won ground with 50% increase in the same interval. Preferences for sport also grew by 45% compared to 41% last year.
According to the latest report of the National Authority for Administration in Communications, the number of households paying television services in Romania has reached 7.3 millions at the end of 2016.
Television Consumption in Romania is a study developed by Mercury Research Romania for ASTRA Romania in April 2017, on a sample of 402 persons. The margin or error is +/-5% and a confidence level of 95%. Data were collected through electronic interviews (CATI).
