Suciu (BNR): There is pressure on exchange rate from recently published commercial deficit figures
There is pressure on the exchange rate coming from commercial deficit, recently published data showing a rising deficit last month, to which Black Friday imports and the budget deficit situation are added, BNR spokesman Dan Suciu said on Thursday.
“There is obviously an exchange rate pressure coming from the commercial deficit. We have recently published data that show an increase of the commercial deficit. So, higher currency needs for commercial exchanges. Let's not forget we have commercial events leading to additional imports like Black Friday, with high transaction volumes with imported goods. That is a situation leading to this evolution of the exchange rate. Moreover, the budget situation which seems more complicated than anticipations, needs clarification,”Suciu said.
The leu depreciated by 0.34 bani (0.07%) against euro on Thursday, reaching a new historic low against the European currency, the exchange rate established by BNR being 4.7669 lei/euro.
