The decision to move the embassy to Jerusalem could affect Romania’s  candidature to the UN Security Council

The minister of foreign affairs, Teodor Melescanu stated on Wednesday in the Commission for foreign policy of the Deputies’Chamer that a decision to move the embassy from TelAviv to Jerusalem could affect  Romania’s candidature in 2019 for a seat as a non-permanent memberof the UN Security Council.

The former premier Victor Ponta, member of the commission asked if Romania’s candidature to the UN Security Council in 2019 would be affected by the announcement regarding the intention to move the embassy  fromTelAviv to Jerusalem.

‘In connection with our candidature to the Security Council – this is one of the elements in the analysis. Indeed,  there is the possibility to affect this campaign. We have almost 42 Arab states and muslim ones with which we have signed bilateral agreements for support, including for our candidature to the Security Council. We will have to see how things will go in a direction or another’ the minister  of foreign affairs said.

He said that for the moment,a process of evaluation of the opportunity of  the decision to move the embassy has been started and he did not want to comment on the statement of the chairman of the Deputies’ Chamber Liviu Dragnea who started the public debate on this topic and spoke initially about an assumed decision. Melescanu said that any political man must assume his statements.
