The European Parliament discusses on Thursday the situation in Romania

The EPP spokesperson (the group of European popular parties), Siegfried Muresan, announced that the European Parliament decided to put on the agenda of the plenary meeting on Thursday the situation in Romania.

The EPP chairman Joseph Daul required on Wednesday the Romanian government to withdraw the OUG regarding the criminal codes and to observe the rule of law, saying that ‘ the adoption of these toxic laws in the middle of the night is counter any principle of democracy and transparency’.

‘I am worried about the recent steps of the Socialist government in Romania which weaken the justice system through an emergency ordnance regarding the disincrimination of abuse of office, as well as the draft law regarding the pardon. The adoption of the toxic laws in the middle of the night is counter to all democratic principles and transparency. The justice system in Romania has become lately independent and transparent and the Romanian government is trying to weaken it. This ordnance does not serve the people and is not in agreement with the independent system of justice. On the contrary, it weakens the justice and undermines the trust of the people in the state institutions’ Daul sent the message through a press release.

He mentions that the anti-corruption fight must continue.

‘ A government which weakens the anti-corruption fight acts against the interests of the people. PPE is together with the citizens of Romania, with the system of justice which does its duty and with all the institutions and the political forces which defend the rule of law’ the PPE leader says.

‘The European Parliament has just decided to put on the agenda of the plenary meeting tomorrow the situation of the democracy and justice in Romania’ he said on Facebook.

‘In this context, the European Commission has already made a critical statement through its vice-chairman in office Timmermans and through its president Jean-Claude Juncker. I think we can state that these decisions do not represent a good and fair signal and taking into consideration foreseeable decisions at the level of the European Union which regard Romania.Due to this fact, we need answers on the part of the government connected to their approach with regard to the continuation of the fight against corruption and the strengthening of the rule of law, as the legal framework has been changed’ the press release says.

The president of the European Commission Jean Claude Juncker and the prime-vicechairman Frans Timmermans warned the Romanian government not to undermine the fight against corruption.
