UNICEF: Four million children, including from Romania, pushed to poverty by the Ukraine war

The Ukraine war and growing inflation pushed into poverty over 4 million children from Eastern Europe and Central Asia, Romania included, according to a report released on Monday by the UN Agency for UNICEF children, quoted by DPA.

The figure, representing a 19% increase compared to 2021, shows that minors “carry the the heaviest burden” of the conflict, UNICEF notes.

The study includes data from 22 countries in the area.

The war impact was very serious for children in Russia and Ukraine. In Russia, 2.8 million children live in households below poverty threshold, according to the study. In Ukraine, half a million children lived in poverty, followed by Romania with 110,000 children.

The great increase could lead to the death of 4,500 children before the age of one, UNICEF warned.

One out of three children born and raised in poverty will live their adult life as an adult in poverty, leading to a inter- generation cycle of difficulties and whortages, the study notes.
