Agriculture : The crop production increased for all crops in 2017 compared to 2016

  • The cultivated area increased for dried pulses, oilseed crops and sugar beet and decreased for cereal grains, potatoes and vegetables.

  • Compared to the previous year, the crop production increased in 2017 for the main crops (cereal grains, dried pulses, oilseed crops, sugar beet, potatoes and vegetables).

The agricultural production was up in 2017 from the year before for Romania's main crops, yet the areas under cereals, potatoes and vegetables were smaller, the National Institute for Statistics (INS) informed on Friday.

The grain production was 12.4 percent up from 2016 mainly due to higher per hectare yields, hitting 24.464 million tons. Production increases were as follows: corn - 33.3 percent; wheat - 17.2 percent; oats - 7.1 percent; barley and two-row barley - 2.2 percent.

The area under cereals dropped 6.9 percent to 5.107 million hectares. Corn cultures accounted last year for 47 percent of the total area cultivated with cereals, and wheat for 39.7 percent thereof.

The production of seed vegetables increased threefold from 2016 to 99,000 tons, as a result of the rise in the cultivated surface (from 59,000 hectares to 116,000 hectares) and of higher per hectare yields.

Oil-bearing crops increased 29.5 percent to 4.657 million tons as an effect of a 6.9 percent increase in the cultivated surface and of higher per hectare yields. Production increases were registered for sunflower (+43.4 pct), soybean (+38.8 pct) and rapeseed (+29.3 pct).

The sugar beet production was up by 10.2 pct to a total of 1.115 million tons due to an 8 percent increase in the cultivated surface.

There was a 16.3 percent growth last year in the potato production to 3.129 million tons as a result of higher per hectare yields, despite the cultivated surface shrinking 7.7 percent to 168,000 hectares from 182,000 hectares in 2016.

For vegetables, official statistics reveal an 8.1 percent production increase (3.631 million tons), mainly due to a higher per hectare yield. The area cultivated with potatoes was 1.8 percent less in 2017 than in the previous year.

The grape production increased in 2017 by 45.7 percent, following the 45.7 percent increase in the per hectare yield, while the orchard fruit production was 25.6 percent lower for an area equal to that of 2016.

According to statistics, Romania ranked first in the EU for the sunflower crop (by cultivated area and production) in 2017, first by the area cultivated with corn, and second after France by the corn production.

Romania is also fifth in the EU by the area under wheat after France, Germany, Poland, Spain, and also fifth by the wheat production after France, Germany, the United Kingdom and Poland.

For potatoes, Romania ranks fourth in the EU by the cultivated surface after Poland, Germany, France, and sixth by production after Germany, Poland, France, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom.
