Coface Romania research : Wholesale trade of pharmaceuticals, up 4pct in 2017

Revenues from the wholesale trade of pharmaceuticals increased by 4pct, at the level of 2017, while the indebtedness of the companies in the field was over 80pct, and 31pct had a degree of negative capitalization, reveals a research drawn up by Coface Romania on the wholesale trade of pharmaceutical products.

According to the research, in 2017, over one third of the companies (40pct) made investments, thus recording a positive capital expenditures (Capex) to depreciation ratio.

However, almost half of the companies analyzed (46pct) registered a decrease in turnover, of which 58pct registered a decrease in the net result.

In this context of the relevant market, as it appears from the data of the National Institute of Statistics (INS), the Romanians allocate less than 10pct of the average monthly expenses of the household for the purchase of medical products, devices and medicines, this category of expenses being surpassed by other three types of non-food goods: tobacco, fuel and clothing.

Also, regarding the trade balance of pharmaceuticals, the official statistics show a deficit during the analyzed period (2013 - 2018), which reached its peak in 2018. Romania's main export partners, outside the European Union (EU), are: Russia, the United Arab Emirates and the United States - these three representing 55pct of the total.

The Coface Romania study on the wholesale trade of pharmaceutical products centralized the data of 1,662 companies, which submitted financial data for 2017 and generated a consolidated turnover of 28.6 billion lei.
