European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso in Brussels on Friday said that, together with Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta and Republic of Moldova Prime Minister Iurie Leanca, he identified two short-term priorities: the Iasi-Ungheni gas pipeline project and the Vulcanesti-Isaccea electricity project.

The Iasi-Ungheni gas pipeline is already on the way and represents the first direct connection of the Republic of Moldova to the European gas market and a first step in a wider project of possibly connecting Chisinau to the European gas market, Barroso told a joint press conference with Ponta and Leanca.

However, he added that this project had to go hand in hand with the introduction of the necessary reforms on the market and of the regulation measures in the Republic of Moldova.

Concerning the Vulcanesti-Isaccea electricity project, the Commission President said that it would allow the Republic of Moldova to increase electricity imports from Romania, in order to contribute to supporting the consumption in this country.

The commission committed to politically and financially support these projects, Barroso added.

He hailed the meeting with Prime Ministers Victor Ponta and Iurie Leanca, which he found a significant first. It is the first time when we have a meeting between the EC, the government of a member state and the government of a so close partner and friend, Barroso said, who thanked the two Prime Ministers for this meeting.
