11 companies expressed their interest in transporting natural gas from Romania to Ukraine through Trans-Balkan pipe , Ukrtransgaz company, the operator of gas pipes in Ukraine announced on Friday, at the end of the evaluation of market demand for this route, Interfax informs.

“Eleven top companies in Europe and Ukraine expressed their interest in the transport of natural gas from Romania to Ukraine for up to 10 billion cubic meters per year, that is twice more than the pipe capacity,”Ukrtransgaz informed.

The Ukrainian company points out that gas transport via Trans Balkan pipe will be possible in 2020, when the present contract for natural gas transport concluded with the Russian group Gazprom expires.

Trans-Balkan pipe is a promising alternate source for the delivery of natural gas to Ukraine, considering  the launch of TANAP gas pipe, of liquid gas terminals in Greece and Turkey as well as the prospects of natural gas output increase in the Black Sea Romanian plateau.

“The 10 year development plan of SNTGN Transgaz company includes a project connecting the national natural gas transport system from Romania with Romanian offshore gas reserves  and Transit 1 pipe (one of the three pipes that make up Trans Balkan system). Natural gas transport system operators from Romania to Ukraine also approved the reconstruction of Isaccea 1 measuring station, which will improve the accuracy of gas measuring and will allow the possibility to deliver in both directions,” Ukrtransgaz points out.

In the next stage, Ukrtransgaz will establish technical parameters and intends to organize a firm open season allocation procedure. New capacities will be offered to participants as of 2020.
