Gas imports down 14pct in Jan-May 2022; production down 5.6pct

Romania imported, in the first five months of 2022, a quantity of usable natural gas of 930,500 tonnes of oil equivalent (toe), 14pct (151,700 toe) less than in the same period of last year, according to data centralized by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).

Domestic natural gas production accounted for more than 2.957 million toe during the mentioned period, 5.61pct (176,400 toe) below that of the first five months of 2021.

The National Commission for Strategy and Forecast estimates for 2022 a gas production of 7.45 million toe and imports of 2.33 million toe, up by 1.9pct, respectively decreasing by 19.6pct, from year to year.

According to the "Energy Strategy 2019-2030, with the perspective of 2050," published on the website of the Ministry of Energy, Romania's natural gas production will reach a peak of 132 TWh, in 2025, as a result of production in the Black Sea, and then it will fall down to 96 TWh in 2030 and down to 65 TWh in 2050.

Final natural gas consumption will remain constant between 2030 and 2050, at the level of 68 TWh. The maximum level of demand is estimated around 73 TWh, and the minimum level at 63 TWh in 2030, 47 TWh in 2050.
