Romania's Government raised more than 17.9 million euros in April 2017 from trading its greenhouse gas emission rights related to stationary sources under the EU Emission Trading Scheme joint trading platform, according to a document posted on the website of the Finance Ministry.

The document shows that traded were 3.76 million certificates related to stationary sources. In 2016, the Romanian Government raised about 195 million euros from similar trades, including also aviation.

Data show that the EU Emission Trading Scheme (EU ETS) was first applied for the January 1, 2005 - December 31, 2012 reference period, while the second phase of the scheme comprises the years 2008-2012, which coincides with the first commitment period under the Kyoto Protocol to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

Romania's participation in the EU ETS started with the first day of Romania's EU membership, January 1, 2007.

The third stage of the EU ETS spans eight years - January 1, 2013 - December 31, 2020.
