Nicolescu (Deloitte): closing down of coal exploitations – much talked about
Closing down the coal exploitations is under discussion in Europe, but there are solutions to make this coal absolutely neuter as regards the environment, namely emissions may be captured and stocked, stated on Wednesday during the Forum for Online Energy Razvan Nicolescu, Energy&Resources Industry Leader, Deloitte Central Europe. “ I wish Romania will not make a strategic mistake. I see in the public space a discussion about the change, in the rural environment, from biomass heating to natural gas. Obviously we cannot go on with wood heating or biomass, or yields under 10% but the solution is not in the gas only, as it is a transition fuel and it pollutes. We should think more about such things and not use transition from transition, namely from biomass to gas and from gas to electricity, which, according to my opinion, is the right solution’ Nicolescu said.
On the other hand, he showed that the ambitions assumed by the EU through the European Ecological Pact are admirable but insufficient without a joint effort, at global level.
‘What worries me is the fact that the effort of the EU is not sufficient. The EU emit less than 10% of the total level of gas which produces greenhouse gas effects, so without the Chinese, the Indians and the Americans in a joint effort, this European effort will be admirable, but there will not be the results we want, namely live in a clean world, where biosystems are not affected. In this discussion at the European level, Romania should prove more courage taking into consideration our reality. We are a country which has, today, 24% of renewable energy in our energy mix, namely we are four percentage points over the EU average. We are the only country in Central and Eastern Europe which intends to increase the percentage of renewable energy at over 30%. In comparison, the Bulgarians intend 27% in 2030, the Poles and the Hungarians somewhere around 22%. Romania, at the level of emissions per capita is much, much under the European average’ the expert said.
Nicolescu said that the EU objective of neutrality as regards emissions for 2050 would mean investments of over 8 trillion euro.’ What I would want is to see there are Romanian companies which could capitalize these investments. What seems most important is how much the Romanian industry can capitalize from these investments, not only at the level of Romania but at the level of the EU. How many photovoltaic panels will we produce in Romania, how many batteries for electrical cars will we produce in Romania, how many rotors for wind turbines will we produce in Romania, how many workplaces will we create? ‘ the expert mentioned.
The deregulation of the natural gas prices starting with 1st July, the strategy for investments of the state-run companies in energy, the amendments of the law of electricity and natural gas are among the analysed topics, on Wednesday during the Forum for Online Energy, organized by FinancialIntelligence, ro.
