Victor Ponta: Lots of money still squandered in state-owned energy companies

State-owned companies in the energy industry still spend vast amounts of money without justification; cutting it down would result in savings on the order of hundreds of millions of euros, Prime Minister Victor Ponta said on Monday night at Antena 3 TV.

'Lots of money is still squandered in state-owned companies. I didn't say stolen, I said squandered. (...) In the energy sector, we're talking about millions, many millions of euros. Because we're not talking about saving copier paper, we're talking about hundreds of millions that (...) could be directed to other projects,' the prime minister said.

In his opinion, the new Minister Delegate for Energy Razvan Nicolescu, due to his experience in a private environment, will be able to impose a new approach in these companies.

'One of the reasons for which I have nominated Mr. Nicolescu for this position is his experience in the private area, his knowledge of how a company in the private area happens to have larger profits, paying the right salaries and costs. In state-owned companies, this culture hardly exists, and we have to build it,' Ponta explained.
