Agriculture minister: EU firms form coalitions not to import meat

Private companies from France, maybe from other EU countries too, suggest they no longer wish to buy meat products other than from the domestic market. These “coalitions” of firms would affect Romania too, said Daniel Constantin, the minister of agriculture.

He pointed out that he had participated in Brussels, on Monday in the meeting of EU Council for agriculture and fishing after having being present last week in the International Salon for Agriculture in Paris. One of the topics approached was that of horse meat.

The measures taken by every member state should not affect the concept of single market. There is a tendency in France and in other member states for private companies to say they would buy only products from the respective state. I think we, the ministers should see that this thing will not happen because it is an attack on the concept of single market. The concept for which the European Union was set up. Beyond that thing it is also unfavorable to economic agents in other member states if such coalitions of private companies would set up to buy only from the domestic market. This is our preoccupation since we are important exporters of many products to EU markets,” Constantin said.

The next meeting on that topic will be held on 18-19 March.
