Berlinale 2013:'Child's Pose' wins Golden Bear for the best film

'Child's Pose,' a Romanian film about the drama of nouveaux riches, directed by Calin Peter Netzer, on Saturday evening was awarded the Golden Bear for the best film prize at the Berlinale 2013 film festival, to the applause of the attendees at the award ceremony.

'I want to thank the Berlinale for having invited me to showcase my film here,' said Netzer after receiving the prize alongside film producer Ada Solomon. Netzer thanked his team, his producer and the cast.

'Usually, I am a fighter, not a winner,' Solomon said in her turn, to the public's applause. She thanked all the supporters of the film and its detractors, saying they all made the team stronger and more determined.

'First of all, I want to thank fantastic lead actress Luminita Gheorghiu; this is especially her prize,' Solomon added.

A well-received film by critics and the public alike, 'Child's Pose' had already won Friday the FIPRESCI International Federation of Film Critics prize at the 63rd edition of the Berlin International Film Festival.

Romanian director Calin Netzer and the actors starring in 'Child's Pose', the Romanian film that won the Berlin film festival's Golden Bear award on Saturday, returned home Sunday afternoon, with Netzer saying he had nurtured hope that the movie would be well-received at the Festival, but winning the top award was unexpected.

'It was extremely well. The film was received well by the media and by the critics and audience. /.../ I nurtured hope, but it is a long way from hope till the achievement, so that we were surprised. It was overwhelming', Netzer said.

He stressed the prize won in Berlin is one of the most important for the Romanian cinema, alongside the Palme d'Or prize won by Cristian Mungiu's 'Four Months, Three Weeks and Two Days'.

Film producer Ada Solomon insisted the Golden Bear award also belongs to actress Luminita Gheorghiu, who played the main character and she explained the competition rules say the movie having won the Festival trophy cannot win another prize.

'It is written and nobody can disregard it. The Golden Bear is Luminita Gheorghiu's. The way Luminita Gheorghiu played is, I think, almost unequalled in the Romanian cinema', Solomon said in speaking about comments that the leading actress of 'Child's Pose' failed to win the Silver Bear for best actress.

Solomon underscored that film is the best country brand Romania has at present.

'The film in itself is an extraordinary ambassador because I think cinema-making is the best country brand we have at this moment and far less millions is spent on it than is being spent on various campaigns relating the country brand', she said.

'Child's Pose' will have its Romanian opening gala on March 7 and will open in theatres from March 8.
