Chamber of Deputies passes controversial justice laws despite opposition protests

The Chamber of Deputies approved on Tuesday the controversial amendments to the justice laws, that were reexamined by MPs following the decisions of the Constitutional Court, business-review.eu reads. The draft bills were approved despite protests from the political opposition.

The draft bill that amends the law regarding the judicial organization was passed with 182 votes for and 91 against. Meanwhile, the draft bill that amends the status of judges and prosecutors was passed with 190 votes for and 98 against.

Also, the draft bill that amends the law regulating the organization and functioning of the Superior Council of Magistracy (CSM) with 189 votes for and 101 against.

The liberal said that they would challenge at the Constitutional Court the way in which the ruling coalition PSD-ALDE votes the justice laws.

MPs from the Union to Save Romania (USR) and liberal party (PNL) staged a protest during the vote.

Social-democrat ( ruling party) MP Florin Iordache, head of the committee that has overseen the changes to the justice laws, said the amendments “don’t impact the independence of the judiciary” and that the changes are in line with the decisions of the Venice Commission.

The Senate has the final vote on these changes, according to News.ro.
