Several NGOs presented to the Parliament a list of 3 million signatures for the banning of gay marriages

Several NGOs reunited as ‘ The coalition for the family’ presented on Monday an initiative for the amendment of the constitution through which marriage between homosexuals would be banned. The initiative includes as definition for marriage the freely consented union between a man and a woman.

To support this initiative, those in coalition for the family presented three million signatures taken from the whole country, the lists being brought in a truck to the parliament.

‘We are witnesses of a historic premiere, national and European – three million Romanian citizens in an enormous effort of solidarity signed the draft law for the revision of the constitution, more precisely article 48 line 1 which means the definition of marriage as union between a man and a woman. We thus try to replace the present text in the constitution which says – marriage relies on the freely consented union between spouses, thus we have more precision in the definition of marriage. Thus, Romania is included in a European trend. There is an initiative at European level for the definition in this way of marriage and we have examples of last year in Croatia and Slovenia who have already organised referendums to include in their constitution this definition’ stated on this occasion the chairman of the initiative committee of the coalition for family Mihai Gheorghiu.

He added that the initiative was signed by the representatives of all cults in Romania and he hoped that before autumn this must be taken under discussion in the parliament and a referendum be organised on this issue.
