29 Syrian migrants was trying to illegally cross the border from Serbia
The Romanian Border Police have caught a group of 29 Syrian migrants, including 17 underage, as it was trying to illegally cross the border from Serbia at the Pustinis border area.
''Acting on a tip, the Border Police of the Cruceni Border Area and officers of the Timis Gendarmerie Inspectorate have started a specific mission to track a group of people reported close to the border between Romania and Serbia, in the Pustinis border area,'' Spokesman for the Timisoara Border Police Nicola Petre-Ionut is quoted as saying in a press statement released on Wednesday.
The group comprised 29 undocumented people - five women, seven men, aged between 18 and 50 years, accompanied by 17 minors, aged between 2 and 17 years. They claimed to be Syrian nationals having crossed the border from Serbia into Romania by foot in order to reach a Western European country.
The group is now investigated for fraudulent border passing and it will be subjected to all appropriate action resulting from the finalisation of the probe. Serbian border authorities will also be notified for a joint investigation of the incident, which entails the activation of the readmission treaty between Romania and Serbia.
This is said to be the largest group of Asian migrants this autumn forcing their entry into Romania in the western border county of Timis.
