The impact of hunger was reduced over the last 20 years, from 8.3% to 5% of the population of the country, but it would be necessary another three decades for the eradication of the phenomenon in Romania, but if the present speed for the reduction of hunger is kept, according to an analysis made by the non-governmental organization INACO – Initiative for Competitiveness.
According to the quoted source, hunger continues to be a reality, in its chronical, acute forms such as subnutrition or calory deficits for almost 5% of the population of Romania which leads to major risks for illnesses, cognitive and physical deficits in development, even death, especially for children under 5.
An important objective for European food safety is the observance of the principles for responsible investments in agriculture, consider the representatives of INACO.
Romania has an agricultural surface of almost 13 million ha, the sixth in the European Union, and it is one of the countries with the highest potential in the agricultural sector. From the agricultural surface which is used in Romania, 60% is cropland our of which almost two thirds is used for cereals. Thus, Romania is one of the biggest ten exporters of cereals in the world.
