Atlantic Council's Brent Scowcroft Center on International Security Chairman, received at the Cotroceni Palace
President Klaus Iohannis received Atlantic Council's Brent Scowcroft Center on International Security Chairman General (ret.) James Jones on Wednesday at the Cotroceni Palace, seat of the Presidential Administration.
According to a release of the Presidential Administration, they debated matters of shared interest concerning the Romania-USA Strategic Partnership, the strategic relevance of the Black Sea region, the perspectives of the forthcoming NATO Summit in Warsaw, and issues of the European energy security.
President Iohannis and General Jones emphasized the highest level of the Romanian-American defence cooperation, as the Aegis Ashore missile defence facility in Deveselu is the latest proof of the bilateral strategic partnership, the release mentions.
The U.S. Marine Corps general thanked the Romanian authorities for the hospitality shown to American troops in Romania.
The two officials agreed on the importance of consolidating and expanding the cooperation between Romania and the United States, both on a bilateral level and within international organizations, including in public debates and at international security expert meetings, the said document adds.
Defence Minister Mihnea Motoc also met on Wednesday General (ret.) James Jones, Chairman of the Atlantic Council's Brent Scowcroft Center on International Security. They discussed the security developments in the Black Sea region, the National Defence Ministry (MApN) informed in a release.
According to this document, Minister Motoc and General Jones - a former U.S. National Security Advisor and former Supreme Allied Commander Europe - considered possible ways of development of several collaboration projects of the Atlantic Council and Romania on matters of shared interest.
"During the meeting, a fruitful exchange of information was carried out on the region's geopolitical realities, as well as on the trans-Atlantic evolutions and perspectives generated by them. In this context, the Romanian defence minister stressed the essential role of the United States of America in strengthening our country's security and the Alliance's eastern flank," the MApN stated.
The two officials agreed upon the importance of the collaboration between the Atlantic Council and Romania and the possible role of this collaboration by specific projects dedicated to drafting and developing some strategies for the assessment and strengthening of the regional security, with emphasis on the Black Sea region evolutions, the source says.
During his visit, General Jones also met Romania's Chief of General Staff General Nicolae Ciuca, the MApN release adds.
