Basescu: I have no right to run for the presidency of the Republic of Moldova

The former head of state Traian Basescu stated on Sunday night that he could not run for the presidency of the Republic of Moldova as  some media said, as he has no right, according to the Constitution as he was not born on the territory of Moldova.

‘I have no right. Look at the Constitution of the Republic of Moldova. You have to be born on the territory of the Republic of Moldova and  you have to … they introduced a condition some years ago to have at least ten years of living in the Republic of Moldova. So, who says such a thing either they haven’t read the constitution of the Republic of Moldova or they have the passion to speak nonsense’ Traian Basescu  for B1TV.

The former president of Romania considers that, after Putin in all surveys he is given as the most popular political figure from outside the Republic of Moldova as he is pro-Union and that is why he took the risk to create a unionist party, namely the Party of National Unity, whose  honorary chairman  he  is.

‘Don’t think I consider a new political career in the Republic of Moldova. The gesture I made was to help – to accept to be the  honorary chairman  of a new party – in order to consolidate  the unionist current’ Basescu said.

The former head of state said that the  file of the Republic of Moldova ‘ must be a priority’ and that ‘ Romania has the duty  to stimulate the unionist current, through political actions and actions of support of the Republic of Moldova’ .

But, ‘ for the moment there are no conditions for a favourable political vote for the reunion of the country, not even at the level of a referendum, nor at the  level of the parliament’ Basescu said.

The former president mentioned that, according to the final act of the convention for security in Europe, the borders can be modified only peacefully, which means through  referendum or through vote of the parliaments.
