Bucharest Pride Festival supported by the European Commission representation in Romania and 26 embassies
The European Commission representation in Romania and 26 embassies support the right of the LGBTI community to participate in June's Bucharest Pride Festival.
"On the occasion of the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia, we voice our solidarity and support to the LGBTI (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex) community in Romania. Considering that the 2016 Bucharest Pride Festival will take place next month, we support the legal right of these communities to use this traditional opportunity for peaceful manifestation in order to draw attention on the specific problems they face," reads a declaration signed by the EC representation and by the embassies of Argentina, Australia, Austria, Canada, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Ireland, Israel, Montenegro, Norway, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Portugal, Spain, Slovenia, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Uruguay.
The diplomatic missions point out that human rights - including justice, equality, humanity, respect and freedom of expression - and the rule of law are the fundamentals of democratic countries, and these values compel the governments to protect their citizens.
The international laws on human rights are based on the premiss that all individuals must enjoy the same rights and freedoms, as stipulated in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The respect for these fundamental values precisely compels the governments to protect their citizens against violence and discrimination and to make sure they all enjoy equal opportunities. Some individuals still face discrimination acts, directly or indirectly, because of their sexual orientation or identity. Our governments thus try to combat such acts by promoting the human rights. Anybody, including the individuals of the LGBTI community, must be able to enjoy the rights and freedoms provided to the citizens of all nations, "the declaration mentions.
