CCR will  debate on 17 September  the intimations of the opposition and of the Supreme Court  on the amendments brought to the Criminal Code

The Constitutional Court  will debate on 17 September  the intimations formulated by liberal party - PNL, save Romania Union - USR, People's Movement Party - PMP and the High Court of Cassation and Justice on the amendments brought to the Criminal Code, stated  for News.ro sources of the Constitutional Court of Romania (CCR) .

PNL, USR and  PMP announced on Thursday that they  lodged an intimation to the Constitutional Court with regard to the amendments made to  the Criminal Code, saying that over 30 amended articles were attacked.

On Thursday as well, the High Court of Cassation and Justice (ICCJ) announced that they referred the Constitutional Court with regard to aspects of non-constitutionality included in the law through which amendments to the Criminal Code are brought. As regards the abuse in office, the judges  state that the introduction of the condition that the deed be done for oneself or a close relative limits’ significantly the area of application of the incrimination norm’. In the intimidation sent to CCR, ICCJ refers to tens of articles which could be non-constitutional.

President Klaus Iohannis  stated on Wednesday that the adoption of the amendments to the Criminal Code is a ‘revolting’ event and announced he would refer the matter on the Criminal Code and the Criminal Procedure Code to the CCR. The president also said that that is happening these days is the dictatorship of the majority and it is profoundly damaging to the democracy.

The draft for the  amendment of the Criminal Code was  passed on Wednesday by the plenary of the Deputies’ Chamber as  decision-making forum. The law was passed with 167 votes ‘in favour’ and 97 votes’ against’ and 19 abstentions as the minimum necessary was of 165 votes in favour.

On Monday, the draft for amendment of the Criminal Code was passed by the plenary of the Senate as first Chamber notified with 74 votes ‘ in favour’,28 votes ‘ against’ and nine abstentions after a tensioned  meeting where the opposition tried to leave the power without a quorum, but this was not possible as the UDMR senators came in so that the meeting could go on.
