Children in Romania aged between 5 and 16 spend, on average 5 hours/day on social networks (study)
The majority of children in Romania (85%)aged between 5 and 16 who have access to the internet spend, on average 5 hours/day on social networks and the preferred terminal is the smartphone, show the results of a study published on Monday..
According to the research made by iSense Solutions exclusively for Lowe Group Romania, the average age when children get the device is 8.5 for the tablet, 9 for the PC, 10 for the smartphone and 11 for other smart devices. Even so, even before they have a smart personal terminal, the young ones have access to their parents’ devices, the study makers say.
The smart terminal which the children use most often is the smartphone, the young ones zapping on average 160 minutes per day, 208 minutes in the case of teenagers of 13-16. At the same time, there is a preference for the tablet for those aged 5-7. The young ones get on the internet especially at home and get used to following musical clips, funny clips and cartoon or to access social networks. They have, on average 14 apps on the smartphone, most used being those for internet surfing, social networks, games and chat/messenger.
According to the study, 71% of the parents stated that they asked their children what to buy, and 51% consider the young ones very persuasive.
On the other hand, the young ones prefer to play on the smartphone, while teenagers socialise. Thus, the children have accounts on several social networks, the most popular being Facebook ( used by 43% of them, with on average 121 minutes/day) Whatsapp (11% /72 minutes) Instagram (2% /67 minutes) and Snapchat (1%/62 minutes).
In this context, the data summarised from the questionnaires show that over half of the children have a Facebook account assisted by a parent, which shows a preoccupation of the latter to the social activity in the digital environment of their children. On Facebook the children give like to their friends’ posts and chat, but there is also a trend of the teenagers (over 57%) to give like to the brands pages and the VIP pages.
As regards publicity on the digital environment, teenagers of 14-16 watch ads especially at the beginning of the vide o clips on You Tube, Facebook, the sites and inside some apps or games. In general, they click to find out more especially on Facebook (28%) or blogs and want to buy the product after seeing the ad inside some games or on Facebook.
The study is the third in the series of Bold by Lowe Group and covers both qualitative methods and quantitative ones. Thus, there were 4 focus groups with children between 8 and 12, 13 and 16, and the quantitative study was made on teenagers aged 14 -16 and children 5 -16.
The data were collected online through the panel Research Romania.ro representative for the urban environment. The results have an error margin of +/-6%.
