ForMin Comanescu: Any sustainable solution to migration must be based on efficient management of profound causes
Foreign Affairs Minister Lazar Comanescu on Monday participated in the Foreign Affairs Council (FAC) meeting in Luxembourg, in which context he underscored that any sustainable solution in the case of migration must be based on an efficient management of the profound causes.
The main topics approached at the FAC meeting were the EU's Global Strategy, migration, and the situation in Tunisia and Syria.
According to a Foreign Affairs Ministry (MAE) release, the ministers reviewed the calendar and modalities of implementing the EU's Global Strategy, voicing their being in favour of an ambitious, balanced and comprehensive approach.
"Minister Lazar Comanescu saluted the proposals of High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission Federica Mogherini, and underscored the importance of keeping the geographical and thematic balance in the context of transposing the strategic document into sectoral strategies," the release shows.
Moreover, the Romanian chief diplomat highlighted the importance of strengthening the resilience of partner states and the integrated approach of conflicts and crises in the EU vicinity. Minister Comanescu stressed in context the importance of a close coordination with NATO in implementing the Joint Declaration of Warsaw and avoiding an activity doubling.
"In respect to migration, the Romanian foreign minister voiced the support for the involvement of EU partners in enforcing the already signed agreements, underscoring that any sustainable solution must be based on the efficient management of the profound causes of migration," the MAE release reads.
Referring to Tunisia, Lazar Comanescu voiced support for the consolidation of EU's support granted to the democratic reform process in this country. He highlighted the modalities in which Romania has already been endorsing various projects in Tunisia and in the states in the region, mainly in the development area, being ready to provide its expertise in terms of transition, with a focus on good governance, the consolidation of the institutional capacities, the rule of law, the fight against corruption and the training of specialist staff in these areas.
The foreign ministers approached the latest developments in Syria, with a focus on the dramatic consequences of the situation on site on the civil population and the modalities in which the EU can come to the aid of the affected population. Thus, they firmly condemned the recent attacks in Aleppo, which caused damages and a great number of victims.
The Romanian dignitary reiterated the support for a political solving of the conflict, as well as the importance of preserving the unity, integrity, sovereignty and independence of Syria. He underlined that Romania encourages and supports all forms of political dialogue, as a unique manner of solving the conflict and reinstating peace.
On the FAC sidelines, there was organised the meeting of Ukraine's group of friends, with the participation, together with the EU foreign ministers, of the European Commissioner for European Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations Johannes Hahn and Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin. On this occasion, a review was made on the security situation in Donbas and its implications, from a political, economic and humanitarian point of view, with the post-conflict reconstruction topic also being tackled.
According to the MAE, the Romanian Foreign Minister reiterated the support for Ukraine's independence, unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity. At the same time, he underscored the need to fully implement the Minsk agreements, highlighting the role of the Normandy format in regulating the conflict in the east of the country. Comanescu stressed the constant political support and the bilateral assistance granted to Ukraine in the context of the processes of domestic reform and implementing the Association Agreement, and voiced Romania's availability to participate in the joint effort on EU level for post-conflict reconstruction.
