Defence Ministry: Romanian experts to participate in NATO crisis management exercise

About 100 Romanian experts will participate March 9 through 16 in the NATO crisis management exercise CMX 16 in which the Alliance will rehearse and test its consultation and decision making procedures at strategic political and military level, informs the National Defence Ministry (MApN).

According to a Monday release, the participating Romanian experts work with the Presidential Administration, the Government of Romania, the Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Romanian Intelligence Service, the Foreign Intelligence Service, the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Public Finance and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Relations with the Business Environment.

The exercise, which takes place annually, involves civilian and military staffs in Allied capitals, including in relevant Ministries, at NATO Headquarters and in the Strategic Commands, the cited source said.

"As with previous CMX exercises, CMX 2016 involves no deployed forces. The scenario was designed to allow the rehearsal of decision making procedures that have been significantly enforced as a result of implementing the Plan of action for increasing NATO's operational capability agreed upon at the Wales Summit," MApN informs.

The exercise relies on a fictitious but realistic crisis scenario as per NATO Treaty Articles 4 and 5, focused on collective defence with challenges posed by hybrid warfare threats, where a wide range of overt and covert military, paramilitary, and civilian measures are employed in a highly integrated design.

CMX 2016 is the Alliance's 20th Crisis Management Exercise since 1992.
