DefMin Tilvar, US ambassador Kavalec discuss attacks on Ukrainian ports near the Romanian border
Minister of National Defence Angel Tilvar had a meeting on Monday evening with the US ambassador to Romania, Kathleen Kavalec, during which they discussed, among other topics, the recent Russian attacks on Ukrainian river ports near Romania's border, MApN said in a press release sent on Tuesday.
The agenda of the meeting included discussions on the impact of the Russian Federation's war of aggression in Ukraine on regional security, with a focus on the situation generated by the recent attacks on Ukrainian river ports near Romania's border.
Minister Tilvar expressed his concern about the intensification of these attacks and said that MApN is working with central and local structures with competence in the field of civil emergencies.
He also stressed the importance of supplementing NATO's air policing missions, expressing thanks for the US decision to deploy F-16 aircraft to Romania in the coming period and underlined the consistent support of the US for the advancement of the F-16 Training Centre project in Romania, which represents "an important resource in the high quality training of Romanian pilots, as well as those from allied and partner states, including Ukraine".
"I appreciate the support of the United States in strengthening the allied defence posture on the Eastern flank and of deterrence of any aggression against Romanian and NATO territory. We continue to act by assuming our role responsibly in the allied security architecture on the Black Sea, where we are a pillar of stability," said the Defence minister, as quoted in the press release.
According to MApN, ambassador Kavalec underlined the US commitment to continue to provide assistance to Romania to strengthen its defence capabilities and to contribute substantially to strengthening allied defence and deterrence on the Eastern flank.
