Depozitarul Central, institution from where the data regarding the shareholders of the Big Privatisation of the 90’s could be discovered

In the 90’s there took place ‘the Big Privatisation’ and over 18.75 million adult citizens received shares to one of the companies in Romania. At present, there are over 8 million such shareholders recorded at Depozitarul Central, from where they could get the necessary data by  following the necessary steps.

When the people do not know to what companies they own shares or what happened to their shareholder certificate, they have to ask the Depozitarul Central to issue a statement. The statement represents  the proof of the right of property on the shares owned at a certain date for an issuer. The document can be obtained directly from Depozitarul Central or by mail, on the basis of a request plus a copy of the identity document.

The interest of the shareholders for what they own is a growing trend, as an answer to the initiatives of financial education and awareness of the capital market data which the Depozitarul Central, together with BVB and the Authority for Financial Supervision have  constantly performed.

As regards the ownership of the inquirer, say the representatives of the deposit, they are extremely varied, with shareholders in every company listed on BVB. There are cases where the companies were withdrawn from trading, situation where the owners are redirected to these companies. By analysing the statistics, most shares are in the five financial investment companies.
Initially, through the programme of mass privatisation, 18,750,498 citizens became shareholders to state-run companies. In 2013, their number dropped to 8,992,575 and in 2017 – 8,476,580, namely half of the population of the country, according to the data of the Depozitarul Central. In Bucharest,there are 916, 767 such shareholders.
