EC: the EU rules require the member states to guarantee that the citizens can exercise effectively the voting right
The rules of the European Union require the member states to guarantee that the citizens of the EU can exercise effectively the voting right, stated on Monday in a press conference a spokesperson of the European Commission.
‘The organization of the elections is the responsibility and competence of the national authorities’ said the spokesperson when referring to the voting process in the polling stations abroad.
‘As regards the European elections, the EU rules (Directive 93/109/CE) require the member states to guarantee that the EU citizens can exercise effectively the voting rights. The national authorities must inform the EU voters who live on their territory in due time and in a proper way on the conditions and arrangements for the exercision of the voting right’ the spokesperson said.
‘As they did for the previous European elections, the Commission will draw up a report which will evaluate carefully the development of the elections in all member states and will draw the necessary conclusions’ he added.
