Report: Romania in top 10 of countries with highest number of servers  used for DDoS type attacks

Romania is in Top 10 of countries with the highest number of command and control servers used for DdoS type IT attacks, according to a report of Kaspersky Lab, the Russian producer of cyber security solutions released on Tuesday.

In Q1, 2019, the number of DdoS attacks grew by 84% compared to Q4, 2018, according to the company. It was a remarkable increase especially for the number of attacks that lasted over an hour, as well as the average duration of the attacks, while Kaspersky Lab figures show that the criminals focused on longer attacks.

Last year the number of DdoS attacks dropped continuously, determining Kaspersky Lab to suppose that cyber attackers who organized attacks to obtain financial attacks to obtain financial advantages and focused on other income sources like cryptocoins.

“However, statistics in Q1 contradict this tendency and show that the number of DdoS attacks blocked by Kaspersky grew by an amazing 84% compared to Q4 2018.This figure may indicate the fact that such attacks continued to be in demand , although they could not be accessed”.

Once new sites renting DdoS services were launched, the number of attacks grew again, experts warned. The most visible increase area can be seen in the category of DdoS attacks over an hour long.

“Their quantity doubled and the average length grew by 487%. These statistics confirm the hypothesis that hackers improve their techniques and succeed in launching longer attacks which are harder to organize,” the press release shows.

Alexey Kiselev, a manager of the company, warned that the DdoS attack market was changing.

“The new DdoS services seem to have replaced the ones stopped by law enforcement organizations. While organizations implement elementary protection measures, criminals use longer attacks. It is hard to say whether the number of attacks will continue to grow as their complexity does not give any sign of retreat. We recommend organizations to be well prepared to cope with complex DdoS attacks,”Kiselev said.
